Duodenogastric Reflux after Esophagectomy and Gastric Interposition
Stomach is considered the “gold standard” as an esophageal substitute after esophagectomy. Reflux disease is considered an unavoidable consequence of esophageal resection followed gastric interposition. Reflux esophagitis shows a progression from inflammation to erosions and to the development of columnar lined metaplasia. With the use of a gastric interposition, the most popular option to reco...
متن کاملDiaphragmatic Hernia after Transhiatal Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer
Diaphragmatic hernia was found in a patient who had undergone transhiatal esophagectomy for early esophageal cancer. Chest X-ray was not helpful, but abdominal or chest computed tomography was useful for accurate diagnosis. Primary repair through thoracotomy was performed and was found to be feasible and effective. However, long-term follow-up is required because hernia recurrence is common.
متن کاملLaparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.
BACKGROUND Traditional esophagectomy may be associated with mortality, considerable morbidity, and lengthy recovery. It is often performed in cancer patients who are typically older, have associated comorbidities, and are often malnourished, all factors that increase surgical risk. Minimally invasive esophagectomy has the potential advantages of being a less traumatic procedure with an easier p...
متن کاملNecessity of routine thoracostomy tube insertion after transhiatal esophagectomy
Introduction: Transhiatal esophagectomy is a widely accepted approach for palliative resection of subcarinal esophageal cancers. This study was designed to evaluate the necessity of routine thoracostomy tube insertion in this technique. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on 123 consecutive patients with esophageal cancers undergoing transhiatal esophagectomy from March 2001 to Fe...
متن کاملUsefulness of Pyloromyotomy With Transhiatal Esophagectomy in Improving Gastric Emptying
INTRODUCTION Pyloromyotomy is a pyloric drainage procedure routinely done during transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) to prevent delayed gastric emptying (GE) resulting from truncal vagotomy. However, controversy still surrounds the need for pyloric drainage following esophageal substitution with gastric conduit after esophagectomy. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of pyloromyot...
